It kills me that in the late 90's when Malcom at Trash American Style was selling off a large part of his collection that included a TON of REV 1-23 tests, I scoffed at buying many of them at 40-50$ a pop (GB, NFAA, SBS, BOLD, Quicksand). I think Craig Mack bought most of them the minute I didn't and flipped them a few years later for 5-10x what he bought them for.

Uhhh, test press records??? YAWN??? Boring and uncool... If any of you guys have ever been in a band, or ran a record label, you would know that test press records are not really meant for collecting at all. Out of my whole 27 years of record collecting life, not one time have I ever been impressed by one single test press record in anyone's collection if it was not given to them by a member of the band or the record label. They absolutely should not be sold for the crazy amounts of money they are being sold for. It is utter insanity! The band should see some of that money!!! Because the person who originally gave that record to whomever they gave it to, gave it to that person as an honor of being loyal to the band or the record label. They are not meant to be sold because they are initially intended for the band members themselves, the band member's closest family and friends, some people here and there at the record label and that's pretty much it... The first words out of a band member's mouth, while giving a test press record away to a loyal fan, usually is: "You gotta promise me you are not going to sell this record." Therefore, it is not very cool whenever a person sells one... I myself have had a few test press records which I either immediately traded for the real 1st press version of the record or just plain other records... Because I always felt that owning a test press is a bad omen if it was not given to me by a member of the band or the record label themselves. Test press records mean absolutely nothing to me, lol.. Actually, whenever I see someone selling a test press record, it upsets me... Just my opinion guys...
Great story though lecky!!! Awesome!!! Wally is a very good person. A kind hearted dude through and through. I was fortunate enough to hang out with him quite a few times myself. I also played a show with his band Moondog back in 1990 at a weird roller skating rink in NE-PA that eventually burned down. Of course, at that time, he was only known as the guy who was in YOT and GB. It really was not that big of a deal at the time at all. It wasn't until years later, after Quicksand broke, when Wally finally got the international respect which he always deserved, that I started bragging about that Moondog show, lol... ;-)

It wasn't until years later, after Quicksand broke, when Wally finally got the international respect which he always deserved, that I started bragging about that Moondog show, lol... ;-) Well that is a little black and white. First off these days labels usually make 15-25 test presses and these are often sold directly by the band or label, so I see no issue with this. Also if a band member or friend of the band wants to sell theirs, then I see no problem with this as this is their property and they can do with it as they please. The only exception to this i would say is if the band member tells someone they are giving it to not to sell it. Obviously test presses from the 80's weren't originally meant to be a collectors item (generally) but since they have been passed on and sold, I see nothing wrong with people trying to collect these. It just something cool and unique and if the people that owned them no longer want to hold onto them and want to sell them or pass them on, why not (a lot if the time band members do see money for these as they are the ones selling them). I personally don't try and collect rev test, but that only because I got into the collecting game late and I'm not crazy or rich enough. I'll just sit here jealous of everyone's collections haha.

I'm not the only one who feels that way dude... Hardcore was NEVER intended to be about big money... It was meant to be underground and affordable... The rich men can have their tiny little test press clique... The only reason record labels are making more test presses nowadays is because they want more money... Sellouts...

Well, what you write is not entirely correct and as Reagan said a little black and white. Test pressings sometimes were also given out as promotional copies by labels/bands in the early 80s. There are like what, 80 test pressings of the Minor Threat LP because of that. I agree with you to some degree that test pressings shouldn't be sold by people who were given them directly by the band, especially if the records are personalized. However, I also believe that in everyone's life there can be circumstances where you kind of have to do something like sell your rare records. Money problems, buying a house,… Or what if someone was really into hardcore 25 years ago, but isn't so much into it anymore today? People change. If older guys decide to hand down their records to give younger kids a chance to own some of the rarer records because they have no real interest in them anymore, I think that's pretty cool. Otherwise the whole collecting game wouldn't work anyway, right? I think you're also right about hardcore never intending to be about money. I still love that about hardcore. But collecting hardcore records is a whole different matter. If you read or watch interviews with people who were collecting 15-20 years ago, you'll see that some records back then were already sold for astronomical numbers for that time. Not the money we're talking today, but a lot of money back then, too. Lastly, talking about affordable records on revcollectors seems a little hypocritical since most of the early records, especially the colour ones, sell for outrageous prices. So if you're talking about a rich men's club of record collectors, welcome, you're its latest member

I think it's odd to be a record collector and not want to collect test presses too. How else do you complete a collection? Sure they're expensive. All rare records are. One of my goals is to be on this test press owners list.

However, myself and plenty of other collectors will still stand behind not getting involved in test press collecting whatsoever... I know I can speak for others because I have quite a few record collecting friends who think test press collecting is straight up lame as hell. And these friends of mine go back a long way. Sorry for speaking my mind on this matter dude... But again, there are a lot of collectors who feel this way. I am not the only one and nowhere close to the only one. And no, I am not hypocritical or the newest member of the rich man's club and I never will be. There is a HUGE LINE between spending $250.00 to $500.00 on a Warzone orange wax or a Together orange wax and spending close to $1.000.00 on an early Rev test press record or $4.000.00 on a CK... And even if somehow woke up tomorrow morning being a billionaire rich guy who can buy anything I wanted, I still wouldn't collect test presses... It's totally against my hardcore morals...

What?
There is a huge line between buying a $5 7" and buying a $500 7".
There is a very little line between buying a $500 record and a $1000 record. You've gone over the deep end long ago when you hit those prices.

One of my goals is to be on this test press owners list. So you strive to be on this almost imaginary list that only about 15 or 20 people in the whole world care about? There is no such thing as a "complete collection" dude... Every collector's definition of a complete collection is different. There really are no rules here man. And who says we have to collect test pressings in order to have a complete Rev collection???

You've gone over the deep end long ago when you hit those prices. I didn't say anything about a $5.00 7" at all... And everyone has their own personal "top dollar" prices of which they are willing to pay for a record... Today's $500.00 is like 1992's $100.00... Just because I disagree with your ridiculous test press collecting, it doesn't mean you have to go throwing words in my mouth or insulting me... Yeah dude!!! You are hardcore to the bone...

How is that insulting? I just don't see the difference in your prices. Anything more than $5 is ridiculous to pay for a piece of plastic and paper. All the $100+ records are just luxury and nothing people with real problems would ever spend a minute thinking about, this is just toy collecting for grown ups. And some of the grown ups collect gorilla toys as well.
I'm not insulting you, I'm part of this ridiculous world as well.

i do understand the fact that back then those test didn't mean shit. nobody cared about them but they had to be done. maybe thats wha there are so little numbers of them from those early pressings.
i also think that hardcore is the only music-scene where tests have that value to collectors. i have never seen a test going for more money from a certain rock band or hiphop artist. maybe some do but most go for very low. i check for test pressings in general on ebay so i can make shure that i won't miss out anything. mostly i just watch them go for fun.
for me a test press is the ultimate record to complete the collection. without its complete too, but with the test its like getting an A+ on a exame.
