In the mid 80's until the early 90's long boxes where used as a form of exterior paperboard packaging for musical compact discs. When compact discs first began to appear in the retail stores, the longbox packaging served a transitional purpose, allowing shops to file new compact discs in the same bins originally used for vinyl records. Longboxes were 12" tall, and capable of containing two separate discs when necessary. Most longboxes were full color, with details about the compact disc on the back, and artwork that was frequently taken from the original square album cover art, reworked for the new shape and size. I own a nice Cro-Mags - Best Wishes long box  But I am almost certain that the Judge - BID, Bold/YOT - split and Shelter - Perfection all came in long boxes. I never seen them, I might have seen Shelter but I am not sure, but old guys in the scene confirmed these where made. Did anyone remember these and saved them? |

I was looking for this thread.. last night was watching some dude here in Peru who owns an original Nevermind long box which is kinda expensive now, and was wondering how many hardcore bands released this long boxes..
I know and have seen photos of:
Quicksand - Slip long box
Into Another - s/t long box
What else..??

But i'm happy with Quicksand, Jane's Addiction (2x), Lemonheads, Sonic Youth, Rollins Band, Ned's Atomic Dustbin etc. I had a Murphy's Law too but threw it away since i never was into them. I got it in my local record store. Now they go for quite some money. Stupid me. |

I bought the Shelter POD in a long box, the week it came out. If I knew we would be talking about this topic now, I would have kept it. I'm sure I ripped it apart and threw it away. I'm a different collector now. I bought a lot of those long boxes back then.

I used to have a ton of these. I think they got phased out around 92/93. I used to cut them up and hang the artwork on my wall. It was usually just the album artwork but in a long rectangular form. They were just made of cardboard, and It was kind of a ridiculous waste of packaging (and probably expensive) since most people just ripped it open and threw them away. My favorite one was the Danzig III artwork, because the longbox used the full Geiger artwork, and the regular CD cut it off. I can't find a good photo online. It's in the bottom left corner.  |

on an unrelated/related Did rev ever put out 7s" on 3" CDs. I have a vague recollection of seeing some, like the quicksand??? There was a short phase of putting out singles on the small cds. That's why there is the depression in your cd tray.
