How often do you hear: "They sound like Youth of Today" "They sound like Cro Mags" "They sound like x, y or z" etc
For the past 30 seconds I was trying to come up with a band so original that no attempts have been made to copy their sound ever.
At first I thought along the lines of Bad Brains, Burn, Absolution maybe, but you do hear every now and then a band that, probably not as well, but tries to take a stab at some riffs that resemble those bands.
And then it hit me. How often the answer to the old question:
- What do they sound like?
Would be:
- They sound like the Dead Kennedys.
I can't think of a single band that even remotely sounds anything like the DK. Could they be the most original group ever? Prove me wrong.

The Middle Class, there wasn't a band before that sound liked them.

Are you asking if there is a band that has tried to copy their sound or if there was no band like them when they were around?

Are you asking if there is a band that has tried to copy their sound or if there was no band like them when they were around? Seemingly both. To me, the post implies the former, yet the title of the thread suggests the latter. Please clarify, Dobek, else we may provide technically incorrect answers and embarrass ourselves accordingly.

I say: youth of today! Expecially wnita, The perfect mix of technics and heart. Before yot everything sounded more like punk or metal. I haven't found a band that "sounds like yot". More, many bands tryed to rip-off that sound, but without success...

Can't Close My Eyes is just a rip off of all good early eighties bands, sure they changed their sound, but that doesn't make them original, still a damn good band.

This is true, that's the reason I've mentioned wnita, in fact I probably thought to the LP more than the band, haha. Anyway I always try to find a record that sounds like wnita, but nothing I've heard reminds me that record...

OK, let me clarify this further: I'm looking for a band that's so different from anything else that came before or after them that it blows your mind.
Total originality.
In a wide spectrum of punk, that would be easier, take Dog Faced Hermans or The Ex or Chumbawamba even.
In HC the only band that it's in its own category, I think, is the DK.
YOT were great but in the originality and inventivness they score 1 out of 10.
They're just one of the bigger fish in the massive Youth Crew Sea. A fish that thought it would be cool to wear the Abused suit rather than tailoring its own.
I want bands that sound like nothing else.

I don't enjoy originality in hardcore that much, but I guess; verbal assault, 108, quicksand, endpoint... I don't know.

Shudder to think. Done.
For awhile every band that wasn't straight up fast hxc was compared to verbal assault. None of them sound like verbal assault though. Trial ruled.
While not completely original, no one gets compared to yuppicide.

Integrity.
I would elaborate, but I don't want to bc this is an undeniable fact. Bands have tried to do what they do (Cursed, Rot In Hell, etc.) but they don't do it with a resemblance good enough to say they do the same thing as Integrity to me.

well..no one sounds like the MINUTEMEN...although probably not regarded as HC
Their will always be bands that inspire an those that just follow them...no one sounded like DISCHARGE or BLACK FLAG or the TEEN IDLES in 1980 but that sound became generic by 1983..HC is a kinda unoriginal genre if it strays too far from being Fast/loud/short songs(etc) it isn't considered HC anymore
DKs were a really important /influential band (I loved them up to plastic surgery disasters) an did break new ground but in god we trust was regarded as a copy of the early DC thrash bands of that time..jello even acknowledged that in interviews an that last lp was totally generic hc

Man is the bastard/bastard noise. Can't think of any other band that even sounds similar..before or after.

I think there are a ton of very original bands in HC, besides of some already mentioned just think of Die Kreuzen, Mecht Mensch, Damage, Willful Neglect (more Punk?), first Jawbreaker 7", Channel 3 (more Punk), also Gorilla Biscuits - I remember their first 7 - nothing sounded like that back then. You just have to take a step away from the well-known HC bands.

2nd and 3rd STALIN lps I always thought of them as the dead kens of japan..older guys who had a wider range of infulences but still basically a great HC band All early 80s HC was innovative and original to some degree..hardly any bands sounded alike back then from GISM to SEPTIC DEATH, NEG APPROACH to DRI, TERVEET KADET,DIE KREUZEN,ANTIDOTE,RATTUS,MORNINGTON CRESCENT..and so many others but they all sounded different to one another
I think you have to consider the BAD BRAINS the most original as they founded the D.C. scene..an NYHC..they had a rock/metal sound aswell so they were an early "crossover" band..shame they were rubbish at reggae though!

regarding bands that were totally original/one-offs, I think alot would probably fall in the early SST/Alt.Tentacles catalog early CRUCIFUCKS..SACCARINE TRUST..maybe the DICKS 1st lp.
also CODE OF HONOUR had there own sound
