I have a student whom I teach every Saturday.
She's an older lady, really interesting, used to work with autistic kids, plays a pipe organ as a hobby. Her husband, who I sometimes talk to is an ochersta conductor. Does an occasional concert here and there.
Anyway, we were having a chinwag about this and that and she started talking about her husband's records. That he has too many, that the turntable and speakers take up too much space etc... Typical wife tirade on husband's hobby. I told her that I myself am mildly interested in records. That I have a small collection etc. So she calls her husband from upstairs and tells him I have records.
What kind of records? Mostly rock I say (they're older people, jazz, classical music kind).
Noizy stuff, he says. What kind of record player do you have? The guy asks. I say DENON. To which he replies: Me, too!!
Which DENON? I say the cheaper one. Quick google search and I tell him that it's the DP-300 (usa.denon.com/us/product/hifi/turntables/dp300f).
How's the sound? he asks. What kind of cartridge does it come with?
I'm not an audiophile, I say but it does the job. I think it's a basic DENON cartridge that isn't the best but for years now I've been thinking to upgrade it, possibly to Ortofone, but due to the lack of money, for the most part, I never got round to it.
Really?? He says.
I used to work at an audio company before I retired. Nagaoka. Have you heard about it?
No, I haven't. I say.
To which he goes into a bit of background story on how Nagaoka was one of the leading cartridge developers back in the day, but the owner died of heart attack at 40-something, his wife took over the company and it took a nose dive. Then he says: Wait a minute, I may have something for you. He goes upstairs and comes back with a really cool display case with a cartridge in it. Try this one, he says. I designed it myself. It should sound good.
After a minute or so of the compulsary "I can't accept it" "It's too much" "I really can't" and his "No, I insist. Please take it." I took the cartridge and went home. Just now, I googled the thing and it turns out that this thing packs some serious Hi-Fi power. My turntable was $300+ new (I bought it for about $160 used) and this cartridge costs $500 which is like... wow...

So now I have a $300 record player with a $500 cartridge which I got from a guy who designed it. I suppose I could call it an unexpectedly good Saturday? I haven't actually installed it yet. I'm gonna pop it into the turntable as soon as I'm done typing this and see if the JUDGE Schism 7" sounds any meaner.
