For the past 3 or so days I've been trying to decide which record cover design is my favourite. Almost as soon as I decide on one I remind myself of another one that's better.
Here's the thing I want you to do:
1. Tell me your favourite sleeve design (the front cover art only)
2. Tell me your favourite whole package design. Covers, inside and out, inserts, booklets, zines, stickers, posters, bells, whistles and whatever else the record originally came with.
Just thought of it now as well: do 7s and 12s separately.
I'm still thinking. I've gone through everything, from 77 punk, Jamie Reid to half of the crass records / mortarhate / corpus christi catalogue (rudimentary peni covers are pretty amazing to look at) to 80s to 90s to 00s releases and I keep changing my mind.
The record cover that's most etched into my brain is without the doubt never mind the bollocks. I literally don't remember time in my life when there was no pistols around. I grew up with this record so I can recreate all the fonts and pistols logo accurately in minute detail with my eyes closed BUT it's not my favourite cover design. Not by a mile.
I don't know which one is but I'm curious of yours.

i will fess up, im not a fan of maiden. but i agree, some of their designs are incredible. eddie is iconic.
i still cant think of what my favorites are. so i will put out a couple of my favorites
1, start today. grew up with it and have always enjoyed the look of it. 2, sdre 7" - friday/spade & parade. love the way that looks as a whole. every detail about it. sadly ive never owned it. this made me think about the strain 7" that pushead did. that one is fantastic too.

There's a ton of iconic 60s and 70s album covers I could point to, but in terms of the record cover I've spent the most time staring at, and alway brings my eyeballs pleasure, if I'm being real, the No Mercy cover is probably my fave: As ridiculous as it sounds, that cover embodies everything that speaks to my artistic sensibilities, or lack thereof. I look at the poster everyday (next to Seiff's also excellent Excel, Suicidal, and Welcome To Venice posters) and they never get old.

And this one's a little obvious, but if you can put down Super Ape without spending a few extra moments to eyeball the cover, then you're a better man than I. Holding a real UK pressing with no border and the bold colors is completely transfixing. It somehow looks about 25% bigger than a regular album cover

OK, so no matter how much I think I keep getting back to the same records. I don't know why but the simpler the record cover is the better I like it. One of my favourite record sleeves ever made is the URBAN WASTE 7 It's a toss up really between that or the 1st CRASS 7" Also I like anything that's pop-artish. For example ever since I remember I liked this The VALVES 7 cover design: I once bought this record, even though it's utter shite, only for the jacket. Somewhere down the road I decided I'd be OK with the scan only so I scanned it and got rid of it. And to this day, even though I'd never dare to listen to this again I want to look at this cover sometimes. Or the VELVET LP with the Warhol's banana that peels off/ Again, shit record, great cover Or the Give Em Enough Rope LP I like the version above with the regular font the most. The other two different chinesy looking font versions aren't as good I think. As for the full package it's probably gonna have to be something from CRASS records with foldout covers, zines, flexis etc... Christ The Album maybe? The box edition, or perhaps one of the DEAD KENNEDYS releases? Same deal, they always had a ton of cool shit coming with some of their records. I'll probably think of something else 10 minutes later

I always liket biohazards urban discipline cover. I thought that its pretty hard with the kids playing on a crime scene. It gave me a feel about how hard those new york hardcore kids where. Scarry stuff for a teen like me On the other hand i would say SSD TKWTS UC SFC And the Abused L&C But thats all hc records. And i guess when it comes to art, hardcore isnt that relevant and groundbreaking. But because of that often minimalistic "cut and glue" stile, i might love it that much! Theres no better cover than a band name in bold letters and a live picture plus some cool colored frames around it! Covers who try to be too artsy often have a contrary effect and mostly the band blows anyway. Right? Attachments:

Very tough one to call. I wouldn't say it's my all time favourite sleeve art ever but Upfront's spirit album has a near perfect 80's hardcore cover. I remember first picking that up as a hooded top wearing teen who used to hang outside and totally relating to it (although I was a long away from NY). The Gorilla biscuits 7" is another classic too. Fuck, that Gorilla even has his own toys out now. Imagine that 28 years ago.

Iron Maiden - Live After Death 2Lp.
Awesome gatefold, and the booklet is insane. Really cool they mentioned how many guitar strings, sticks etc. were used. Than you have that list of shows they played which is a few pages long. This one is exactly what I love about records...read credits, who recorded this and where...so much info...
That booklet makes you forget the New York City Hardcore The Way It Is 1st press has a booklet.
If you want something awesome in your collection...pick one up.
