I've had this tape for years now and never listened to it. Only recently I bought a tape deck so I finally had a chance to give it a spin? a roll? Anyway, when I got the tape years ago Porcell told me that "Those are the mastering reference tapes we got after the mastering was done so we could hear what the actual record would sound like as opposed to the mixdown from the studio. A lot of eq and compression happens in the mastering so it usually ends up sounding dramatically different."I always wondered if these sounded any different from the record. To my ears the tape sounds identical to what's on the LP but I'm nearly deaf so maybe some of you could tell for sure. You can download the tape recording here: ravenxarmy.com/tmp/judge/judge-ref-tape.rar

Great post, thanks!
I haven't had the time to listen to your file yet, but if what Porcell says is correct, it should NOT sound any different to the record.
Now, if you had a tape of the mixdown, that's a different story. Pretty sure they didn't want another Chung King fiasco, so they played it safe.
I would think that an acetate would have the same function as the tape above (but is more expensive).

And being the doofus that I am, I had to look up which song was missing... The "new song" became Where it Went.
So they finalized that song probably just before the studio was booked, that's how it goes with bands... And Where it Went was not on Chung King, so probably made between the 2 studio sessions.
Anyone know the date of studio recording of the Chung King record?

Funny that this tape was made exactly 10 years before edge day became a thing haha
