... than they actually got.
As Friends Rust
From the perspective of some 20 years, as I'm listening to those records now, they really do hold up for me.
Awesome lyrics and great music. I wonder if it's because they popped up at a wrong time? Late 90s were still all about the chugga chugga type shit and early 2000s saw that transition back into old school with all of them new labels popping up B9, DB23, Youngblood, Lockin Out etc. AFR didn't really fit into any of that at that time.
Maybe the fact that Damien stopped being sxe for whatever reasons he had, maybe that put some kind of stigma on them as well. I vaguely remember being at one of them bigger fests in Belgium, I think it was Ieper? where AFR headlined one of the days. They played London some 2 days later. I was standing and chatting with Kurt Catalyst and a bunch of random kids when Damien came up and said "Hey Kurt, long time no see" or something to that effect and Kurt completely blanked him. Damien stood there with his hand outstretched for some seconds and walked away. Kurt really didn't like them edge breakers haha.
All that aside, after all these years AFR still have legs in my opinion. More than any of the Catalyst bands I'd say haha. I've just looked on discogs and it turns out that I'm missing a lot of their releases. Time to get on it... Seems like they've released some The Best Ofs and other what nots in the past few years.
It seems they're still going as well, which is great.

Statue. Always thought they had the most underrated record out (Filter the infection) on Rev. It's still criminally overlooked today even with the Chain of strength connection. Maybe they just came round a bit too early for the post hardcore boom that happened a little later. It's a shame they only left us with a few tracks. Lincoln are another band from the same period that never got the props despite an handful of releases. I believe there was an unreleased album worth of stuff that never saw the light of day. If that is true I wonder why it's never come out.
