I was pretty close to being done with everything except Misfits records. But I spent the weekend at Geoff's and he told me I need to spend a little more time on this board. So I have been reading the threads, looking at the pictures, and the insane pressing info, and I am psyched on it again. So thank you Rev board. Although I gotta say it sucks I had to find out about this board through vinyl noize, why no love Jon?

I got all depressed once when I had a bad break up, my GF didn't like the fact that I collected records so I told some friends that I was gonna sell the lot (I was looking for something to blame it all on), until one of them pointed out that I had been a record collector for 20 years and she had only been around for 3 years. A record collection is for life, a girlfriend is there until the next one comes along....

i go through phases too. right now i'm wanting to sale most of my collection "filler" and slim the collection down to just the ones i really want.
in fact i'm in the same boat as Jeff. i was getting over collecting and this board has gotten me super pumped on it again. Thanks Jon...... not too sure my wife thanks you though!

I was never really "on the verge" of quitting collecting. I enjoy it way too much. However, every time I've gone through some big changes in my life (moving to another country etc) I would sell a large chunk of my record collection only to re-buy most of them again once I settled down. I have some records that I sold (for various reasons) and then bought again 3 or 4 times over.

I am actually right now in the process of trimming down, I think 2012 will be the year for quality above quantity.
I am still debating if I will drag along some records with me when the weather gets better to some shows, to sell a lot of stuff.
Or to sell a lot of stuff in a bulk.

Jeff I'm glad you like the board. Looks like I'm going to have to wait a few more years before I can get my hands on your Luke b side!

I lost interest in both music and record collecting for a while about ten years ago due to some girl. But then she left and I had time on my hands and I got back into it again.
I think collecting comes and goes in waves. You are into it, then you get bored, then something ignites your interest again. But what I find odd is when people who have collected for years just quit and sell everything. I guess I've never understood how people can do a total U turn on something that they have been passionate about for years.
Having said that, I really wish I could quit collecting. I think it would be fun to sell the whole lot and watch the money roll in.

i'm considering more and more to sell most of it. i have too many records for my taste and they just rott away in boxes. the only stuff i really care about is the rev, dischord, x-claim and teamwork stuff. and then when i look through the boxes theres one record i have to keep and another pops up and another..... and in the end i keep em all.
compared to you guys i just have a small collection counting 650 records in total. how many do you have?

Mood swings and erratic with purchases with sudden feelings to want to sell everything. Wonder what Sigmund Freud would have to say.

I have been collecting record for about 25 years... originally I thought that when I would marry and have kids I would give up, but even now that I am married and with 2 kids still have the shudders when I receive a package with some beautiful vinyl in ! only thing is - I don't need 2000 records, I want to end up with 400 - 500 cool ones, and all the others can go. I have sold about 200 records in the last months, and will continue this way. I could only think of selling a CK or a Minor Threat 7" to fund my retirement, or in case I lose my job and end up unemployed, otherwise.. a few selected vinyls will come to the grave with me !!

Just an estimate but I've got about 4200 records.
18 boxes of approximately 150 7"s = 2700
15 shelves of approximately 90 LP's = 1350
and other odd boxes of 10"s, 8"s, test pressings, sale/trade stuff = 150
Insured as a collection for £50,000 gives an average price of almost £12 per record.

I just included it in my home insurance with an extra of 40'000. Guess this should cover it

That's how I did it, but because it was a collection the insurance company wanted to add it to my existing policy as a "High risk item" (like jewelry or expensive art) which would have sent the premiums through the roof, but I managed to convince them that due to the fact that someone would have to come with a van and carry them out which would take an hour or so, or have an extensive knowledge of the hardcore genre and cherry pick items from my collection it made the records relatively low risk, the person at the call centre took all the info I gave him and passed it on to the underwriters, and they agreed with my points and just wrote it into the general contents of the home, it's stated on the policy as a record collection so if the worst happened I should get paid out....insurance companies are notorious for trying their best to avoid paying the full amount in a total loss situation (fire/flood) though. However if they paid me £50,000 I don't think I'd spend it all on records, if I had to start again from scratch I'd just buy the big hitters that I never owned plus the old favourites.

My collection is nowhere near the league of some of the heavy hitters on here, but I've still thought about giving it up a few times. I've never been afraid to let go of records from time to time, so its been kind of a revolving door. I think a few of them will go to the grave with me though.

Just to add a note on the home insurance. I believe that the the record collection would fall under the category "valuables". My partners farther is an insurance insurance broker, getting the records covered shouldn't be a problem. The problem would be trying to proove the value. More insurance underwriters need to start collecting vinyl.

More insurance underwriters need to start collecting vinyl. I keep all my paypal emails in a separate file, so that if I loose everything in a fire, I have some proof of all my purchases. That, and the collector'sfrenzy and popsike databases should be enough proof for the insurance company. I'd like to know what your partner's dad thinks about that though...
